The libertad AR-C is my current "battle mod" rifle instead of the ssgp58. With the compensator that improves the recoil in all four directions it fires like a rail gun.
From 5 on wards, I believe everything can be played co-op. Main story, side quests etc. I have played co-op on 4,5,6 and New Dawn. All where great fun. Id recommend from 5 on up for the above reason though. New Dawn is especially fun as you have the expeditions, which are quick to play through if you dont want to commit to a long story mission. 3.
